A four-week plan for Financial Literacy Month

About 30 minutes a week, plus the five short game sessions in week two. It works for a single class, a whole school, an after-school program or a family.

Week 1

Choose

Every money skill starts with a choice between two things.

Run the free worksheet for your grade band: Need or Want? (K–2), 50/30/20 (3–5), Where Did $177 Go? (6–8) or The Credit Card Trap (9–12). Finish with the talking question on the answer page.

Week 2

Play

Five school days, one decision a day.

Students play The $100 Week™ in the browser: $100 and a week of real choices. It runs Monday to Friday, needs no accounts, and collects no names.

The $100 Week™ →

Week 3

Plan

Turn what happened into a plan.

Younger students set a savings goal and draw the jar. Older students use the savings goal planner or the compound interest calculator with their own numbers and write down one thing they would do differently.

Week 4

Bring it home

The lesson that sticks is the one that reaches the family.

Send home three questions for the car or the store. Invite a local banker or credit union volunteer for Teach Children to Save Day. End the month by asking each student what changed.

Dates worth knowing

Mid-March

Global Money Week

OECD International Network on Financial Education

An international week of youth money activities, a good warm-up for April. The 2026 edition ran March 16 to 22.

All of April

Financial Literacy Month

Recognized by Congress; led by the Jump$tart Coalition

The U.S. month for financial education, observed by schools, banks, credit unions and libraries.

Late April

Teach Children to Save Day

American Bankers Association Foundation

Bankers volunteer in K–8 classrooms. In 2026 it fell on April 23. A good day to invite your local bank or credit union in.

2027 dates for Global Money Week and Teach Children to Save Day are set by their organizers early in the year; this page is updated each February.

Where Financial Literacy Month came from

It started as a single Youth Financial Literacy Day, created by the National Endowment for Financial Education and later handed to the Jump$tart Coalition. Jump$tart expanded it to the whole of April in 2000. In 2004 the U.S. Senate passed Senate Resolution 316 designating April as Financial Literacy Month, and Congress has recognized it with resolutions most years since.

Teach Children to Save Day also falls in April, so it's a natural month to invite a local banker or credit union volunteer into the classroom.

Questions

When is Financial Literacy Month?

Every April in the United States. In 2027 that's April 1 to April 30.

Why is April Financial Literacy Month?

It grew out of a single Youth Financial Literacy Day. The Jump$tart Coalition expanded it to all of April in 2000, and in 2004 the U.S. Senate passed Resolution 316 designating April as Financial Literacy Month. Congress has recognized it with resolutions most years since.

What is the Financial Literacy Month theme?

There is no single national theme. Organizations set their own each year. The four-week plan on this page gives a classroom one: choose, play, plan, and bring it home.

Is there a youth financial literacy month?

The month began as Financial Literacy for Youth Month and many schools still frame it that way. Today April is Financial Literacy Month for all ages, and schools usually focus on kids and teens.

What are good Financial Literacy Month activities for kids?

Anything that puts a real choice in front of a child: sorting needs and wants, splitting an allowance into spend, save and give, reading a pay stub, or comparing ways to pay off a credit card. The free worksheets on this site cover each of those, one per grade band, with answers.

For schools

Make April the start, not the whole thing.

A free five-week pilot with one class runs straight through April and ends with a report on what changed in how your students make money decisions.
